Hi, I am writing because I find the gamsat selection process to be unfair and discriminatory. There is too much emphasis placed on how fast you can think, instead of the quality and complexity of performance.

The Gamsat is a five and a half hour exam. I have heard the most special consideration I would be awarded for my learning difficulties, is one hour extra time. This is not good enough for me to have a shot at getting into med. I can handle the complexity of the material, but not the time constraints.

Is there another way of getting into med?? Are there any universities that offer med that don't have the gam test as their selection criteria???

Is it possible to get into med having done further degrees like a PhD or some other sort of higher education? I think this used to be the case but I am not sure if it is anymore.

Also, does anyone know for sure that I can't get more than one hour extra time for sitting the test?

I really hope someone can answer my question because it just seems so unfair. I am a normal girl, I deserve a chance just like anyone else.

Thanks in advance,
Maddie.

I have a biology degree (microbiology) and yet I cannot do the science questions, why is this? They are just so impossible! They word them in such a roundabout way and I hate calculations so much, is there any way I can get better at these questions within the next week and a half, before the exam? I've tried all the past papers but I always get real low scores on the science section.

I've just read your two posts, and to be honest, I think its a little strange that you'd spend your last dollars enrolling in GAMSAT, when you haven't even worked out what a GPA is, or what you need.

Mate, I really wish you the best of luck, but you need to step up to the plate and do some of your own research.... This means reading websites like this one, sure.... but mainly means reading the ACER manuals through their websites which will tell you everything you need to know.

There are plenty of people who will happily answer genuine questions, but please don't come on here looking for someone to hold your hand, and fill in your application for you. You want to be a Doctor, and if you're going to make it, you need to be atleast a little resourceful.

I mean no offence... I just want you to do your own work, and ask questions when you get stuck.... not when you can't be bothered looking into things properly for yourself.

Best of luck.
_________________
"I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavour"

Hello!

I didn't attend any Des O'Neill courses but I have hand-me-down MCQ books that I am using for practice questions. Currently I'm doing these in timed fashion e.g. giving myself one hour to answer about 40 Science MCQs of any particular skills basket. However, my performance is very variable across the different skills baskets, and I'm wondering if it's because these groups of questions aren't designed to be done consecutively in a timed way, as they represent types of questions that may on average take a greater or lesser amount of time compared to the average time-per-question that you'd go by when doing a full-blown Section III.

Does that make sense? Does anyone else have experience of practising using these questions and if so, how did you approach them? I know I should probably continue to make myself do them in strict time limits, but it's freaking me out when I struggle horribly with timing in some "skills baskets" compared to others.

Would appreciate your advice!

Thanks,
Ali

I'm moving to Brisbane in Novemeber and am planning to write the GAMSAT in 2011. During my last trip to Brisbane in 2009, I picked up the MediRed complete home study package. I'm also using Exam Krackers, the ACER prep books, and my science textbooks from undergrad. Looking forward to chatting with some of you!

I got a PM asking why pharmacy?

Honestly, the reason is that each week you'll be looking at some pretty complex pathologies, physiologies and managements. Before you can start looking at these you need to understand the underlying Anatomy.

The big thing is that Pharmacology is pretty full on, in and of itself, so having that background would be an awesome step up. In my experience, its the pharmacists who seem to understand the effects and interactions of the treatment regimes better than anyone else.

J
_________________
"I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavour"
