Very Happy FREE EVENT!!FREE FREE FREE

Hey guys,

I hope revision is going well ! I have some very exciting news for you all. First I'd like to tell you that my degree is in Biochemistry and I am training to be a chemistry teacher.

I'd like to hold a FREE EVENT on July 17th covering the following topics

Proteins and amino acids
Carbohydrates
Lipids
Digestion
Respiration
Equillibrium
Molar quantities
Organic Techniques
DNA and Genetics
Mitosis
Meiosis
Diabetes
The Atom
Buffers and Acids
Enzymes

This list is a preliminary one but shows the intent of the course is to give an introduction to Biology and Chemistry. The reason I am doing this is to gain experience in public speaking and experience teaching. This is the reason the course will be free. The only cost will be to hire out a venue so I assume will be £10 or so, nothing considering this is a whole day course which could cost hundreds of pounds.

Please display an interest on this thread, I have subscribed to this thread so is the best way to get in contact with me. Please let as many people know as you can as it brings down the venue rental for everyone.

Please post and let me know your thoughts,

Noel

PS Please feel free to suggest topics that you'd like to be covered.

GAMSAT Discussion :: What are my chances for med? :: Posted by wkoa001

Hello everyone.

I'm currently a pharmacist in NZ and I want to apply for medicine in Australia for 2012.

My weighted avg GPA from uni is 6.7 but I have never taken a GAMSAT before, and neither a UMAT.

I suppose the universities I can get into will depend on the GAMSAT results I get, so what kind of marks should I be aiming for if I want to get into Sydney or Melbourne? Is there a lot of people who get in with first time GAMSAT scores? Where shall I start??

Thanks

Hi, you probably know that there's only 2 med schools in NZ, and they both look at UMAT scores instead of GAMSAT.
Both take in international students although Australians are probably regarded as local students.
You can check out the auckland university website (i can't write the web address) and go into FMHS (faculty of medical and health sciences), prospective students and it pretty much outline how you can apply. Good Luck!

From what I have heard Melbourne has always been very competitive. I do however believe that the prerequisites will knock a few people out. Predominantly those without science backgrounds who went well on sections 1 and 2 of the GAMSAT. Similarly, those who went very well on the science section, but fell down in other sections will be disadvantaged because of the equal weighting of all three sections.

Having said that, I know of a few people who have geared their subjects specifically around gaining entry into Melbourne.

I guess overall there is no real way of telling how the admission process will go.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I live in metro Melbourne.

I wonder if the new requirements (pre-requisites) from Melbourne will knock out a lot of people.

I also wonder what the prev min scores were for Melb, before they introduced this new structure!

For sure you would be in the running for Monash and Deakin.

I have a feeling Melbourne is going to be pretty competitive and there are rumors that they may give preference to people from Melbourne uni who are applying, or that they have promised a certain amount of places to current Melbourne Uni students.

Having said that, Melbourne takes all GAMSAT sections equally which means that your mark is more like 63.

Are you a Melbourne resident? or are you of rural origin?

All things considered, the three universities are all great and will provide you will fantastic medical training.

Hey everyone~

I'm still trying to sort out my preferences and am feeling a bit stressed out about whether I should list Melbourne Uni down as my first preference.

I got:

humanities - 58
written - 72
science - 60

overall - 62

My weighted GPA is 6.52, unweighted is 6.42.

I think with my scores I would be able to get an interview with Monash or Deakin and am wondering if I'll be shooting myself in the foot if I put Melbourne down first.

It would be hard for me to relocate and I would really really love to get into Melbourne.

What do you guys think?

Hey Sue

The English you used to express yourself was no different than an average English speaking person in any forum! Having said that, it is true that reading from different sources to improve comprehension as well as working on improving English communication generally, as Lovebite suggested, is definitely advisable.

Keep in mind that every year hundreds upon hundreds of ESL students have met success with the GAMSAT so it can be done with sufficient effort.
